Microsoft, the global software company, is to invest USD2bn (E2.18bn) over the next five years in a move to position its Xbox console at the forefront of the video gaming market, a company executive told CNet News.com

The marketing director for Microsoft's games division John O'rourke told CNet that the company's investment will encompass building out the network for online Xbox gaming, research and development and support for game developers.

Microsoft is already understood to be outlaying USD40 (E44) to USD50 (E54) per console to establish the market and facilitate the growth of the Xbox online gaming service, dubbed Xbox Live.
