Sony has announced that the European trials of its online gaming service for its PlayStation 2 console will begin at the end of March.

Sony has already launched the online service in the US and Japan, where it claims to have sold 600,000 of the network adapters that enable online gaming. Microsoft, which unlike Sony charges a subscription for use of its dedicated online network, Xbox Live, says it has 350,000 subscribers and has already been testing its European service for some months.

Gamers who wish to take part in the Sony trials will need to purchase a PS2 network adapter, priced in the UK at E60 (GBP40), and have access to broadband. Unsurprisingly, given...
