KDDI, Tepco form alliance to rival NTT

Telecommunications Mergers & Acquisitions, November, 2005 by Anonymous

As per a report in AFP, Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco) and KDDI, based in Japan, have decided to merge to compete with another Japanese company, NTT. KDDI will acquire Tepco's telecom subsidiary, PoweredCom, through share swap. The $870 million deal will be carried out on January 1, 2006.

Tepco is the largest provider of power in the private sector across the world. With this deal, Softbank, NTT, and KDDI will be the major players in the landline market in Japan. However, KDDI has to use NTT's landline network to provide cellular services to customers. With the acquisition of Tepco, KDDI will get access to fiber-optic lines of PoweredCom to provide services to residential as well as corporate users.
