Telefonica denies media reports of Brazilian operations merger with Telecom Italia

Telecommunications Mergers & Acquisitions, June, 2007 by Anonymous

According to a company spokesman, a deal signed in April 2007 permitted Telefonica to acquire a minority stake in Telecom Italia.

The deal outlines independence of management and assets of the two companies overseas. A Spanish-Italian consortium comprising Telefonica, Assicurazioni Generali, Sintonia, Mediobanca, and Intesa Sanpaolo acquired 16.3 percent stake and 23.6 percent voting rights in Telecom Italia in late April 2007. The purchase of the stake in Telecom Italia generated speculations that Telefonica might seek to take over TIM Participacoes, Telecom Italia's Brazilian mobile unit.
