Storage device capable of holding data from three compact disks.

TDK Corporation has unveiled a sample of an innovative media device, the ML-R or Multi-Level-R, with a storage capacity equal to three recordable compact disks, at InterOpto2001, the optical-technology exhibition.

The technology that was used to develop the ML-R was developed by US-based Calimetrics Inc, which not only allows three times as much data to be stored but also allows data to be transferred three times faster that for normal CD-Rs. The new technology works by creating eight different sizes of recording marks, and allows three bits of information to be stored in each mark because the reflection coefficient varies according to the mark size.
