Sony to launch Walkman featuring biodegradable plastic. (Environment and Recycling).

Sony Marketing (Japan) Inc has announced that it will release the Walkman WM-FX202 headphone stereo manufactured using a biodegradable plastic, called polylactic acid, for the casing from 1 November 2002.

Polylactic acid is a biodegradable plastic made from plants. It replaces ordinary petroleum-based plastic and is expected to save oil resources. It decomposes into carbon dioxide and water after being buried in the ground. With these features, polylactic acid is environmentally friendly.

Sony's WM-FX202 has adopted polylactic acid for more than 90% of its casing (on a weight ratio). Sony devised a filler material to be mixed with polylactic acid in co-operation with Mitsubishi Plastics Inc and Sanpo Kasei Ltd. They successfully developed the material...
