Alloy developed for use in power transmission cables. (Metals and alloys).(Sanyo Special Steel Company Ltd, INVAR-H3)(Brief Article)

New Materials Japan, March, 2003

Sanyo Special Steel Company Ltd has developed the novel alloy INVAR-H3, which is used for core wires of high-voltage power transmission cables.

INVAR-H3 has a tensile strength higher than any other invar wire, and is very suitable for use in making twisted cables. The thermal expansion of the invar alloy is much lower than that of steel, therefore electric current can be increased without sagging of cables due to heat generation, so that the number of iron towers constructed is reduced to contribute to lower costs.

INVAR-H3 has already been produced for foreign markets. It is expected to be widely used more in the future as the demand of electric power remains at the currently high level throughout the world.
