Nisshin Steel Co Ltd has developed a soft stainless steel sheet, which can be formed to a very exact shape without the metal cracking, even if the process involves multi-stage deep drawing or cold-forging.

Stainless steels are corrosion-resistant and are used to manufacture a variety of items which can operate in humid atmospheres. Austenitic stainless steels are easier to work than ferritic stainless steel, but when exposed to severe working, fine cracks often occur, especially at the expanded edge.

Although the inventors investigated and researched working conditions which enable the formation of an austenitic stainless steel sheet to a particular shape without developing fine cracks, cracking was not completely suppressed by mere control of working...
