Sanyo Special Steel Co Ltd has developed and commercialised a new type of carburising steel, which it plans to market under the TMAX brand. The company is targeting the automotive market for powertrain components, which demand high-strength steels.

The TMAX steel is produced by the addition of titanium during the carburisation process, which helps refine and stabilize the metal, giving it its high strength--the fatigue strength is approximately 10% greater than rival products--at a relatively low cost.
