Hitachi to commercialize colour electronic paper in 2006.(Optoelectronics)

Hitachi Ltd plans to start selling colour-capable electronic paper, based on its 3 mm-thick liquid crystal display (LCD) as early as 2006.

Equipped with a special panel that has more than double the surface light reflectivity of its conventional counterparts, the panel is capable of showing an image bright enough for easy viewing without using a backlight.

Hitachi achieved this colour display capability by employing a mechanism that shifts the distance between electrodes. Electronic paper has already been commercialized, but most types can only display black-and-white images.
