DoCoMo, Sony make cell phone from plant-based plastic.(Plastics and polymers)

NTT DoCoMo Inc and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications Japan Inc say they have jointly created the first mobile phone that is made from a plastic derived from plants.

The handset is made from a plant-based plastic developed by Sony Corp. Starches and sugars are fermented and chemically bonded to create the substance, with corn as the other ingredient. The resulting resin comprises around 60% of the outer surface area of the phone's case and battery cover. The portion made from the plant-based plastic weighs roughly 22 g.

Manufacturing the phone, which is the first of its kind in the world, does not involve the use of oil as a raw material.
