Putting the malpractice crisis into perspective

The practice of medicine has become so stressful that almost three out of five physicians have considered leaving the field, according to the results of an American College of Physician Executives survey. And more than one-third have actually sought jobs outside of healthcare. While more than half the respondents have tried to combat morale-related problems by talking with their colleagues, more than a fourth have turned to professional counselors. When asked to cite the single largest cause of their dissatisfaction, most doctors identified low reimbursement rates (22 percent), followed by loss of autonomy (21 percent), red tape (17 percent), patient overload and loss of respect (12 percent each), and the malpractice environment (11 percent).
