Ah, tax season. It marks the perfect storm of taxpayers eager to get their refund and criminals hungry for personal information. And this spring is turning out to be no exception. The IRS warns of a rash of e-mail and telephone scams whose aim is to latch onto a victims personal and financial data. In one scheme, a person calls and identifies himself as an IRS employee, promising a sizable "rebate" to the taxpayer for filing his taxes early. The caller then asks for the persons bank account information, so that the money can be directly deposited. If the potential victim refuses, the "deal" is withdrawn. In a similar scam, the taxpayer is sent an e-mail (purportedly from the IRS) that instructs the person to click on a link to claim his or her refund. The form that...
