Middle Tennessee--Nissan Motor Corp. plans to spend $1 billion expanding two central Tennessee plants, creating a total of 2,000 new jobs at the facilities in Decherd and Smyrna, southeast of Nashville.

The Japanese-owned automaker announced that it would more than triple its Decherd engine and transaxle factory to supply components for vehicles built in the United States and Mexico. Nissan will upgrade its Smyrna car and truck factory, expanding production capacity to 500,000 units per year, nearly a third more than current output. The improvements come as the automaker seeks to cut costs, reduce the impact of overseas currency fluctuations and deliver vehicles to consumers quicker by building more models in North America.
