Alcatel-Lucent signs deal with EASSy consortium to build undersea fiber-optic cable network

The Eastern Africa Submarine Cable System (EASSy) consortium has signed a deal with Alcatel-Lucent for building an undersea fiber-optic cable network. The France-based company is not waiting for financial approval from financing agencies to initiate this project. Alcatel-Lucent had received a tender for constructing an EASSy system in July 2006; the project was then estimated to be worth $300 million.
Commercial services on the new network are likely to be launched in the third quarter of 2008. The EASSy project will reduce ...
