Federal Trade Commission targets junk e-mail.(Brief Article)

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has intervened to ensure that those who send unsolicited so-called "junk" e-mails are identified and those who fail to meet privacy rules are punished. In addition the FTC is lobbying Congress for more effective powers to counter deceptive e-mails.

In recent evidence to a Senate Sub-committee studying the problem of unsolicited commercial e-mail (UCE), the FTC has come firmly down on the side of consumer choice. It told Senators that a key provision of legislation should be to give "consumers the ability to chose the information they receive over the Internet" as this should "create more confidence in its content and in the sender".
