The US National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST's) Information Technology Laboratory has championed a new technology for controlling access to computer networks known as role-based access control (RBAC).
Taking the right approach to computer security can lead to significant financial savings for an organization, NIST says. Over the period 1992-2006 for which impacts were estimated, NIST's RBAC work could save about US$292 million, according to a study conducted for NIST by the Research Triangle Institute (RTI) of North Carolina. This estimate is translates into a benefit: cost ratio of 109:1.
