Bell & Howell Proquest will digitize The New York Times backfile dating back to the first issue in 1851. It will be available on the internet through ProQuest[R] on-line information. A total of 3.5 million pages are involved. The effort is part of Bell & Howell's recently-announced ProQuest Historical Newspapers[TM] Project.
The electronic file will be released in segments covering 10 years each. Complete digitization is expected to take 15 months. Digitization will be done from existing microfilm backfiles. Bell & Howell Proquest is farming this work out to service bureaus.
Bell & Howell will continue to provide microfilm as well as digitized on-line backfiles of The New York Times.
