CDC cleaning checklist

Recommendations adapted from the 2003 CDC Guidelines

* Clean all visible blood and other contamination from dental instruments and devices before conducting sterilization or disinfection procedures.

* Use automated cleaning equipment (e.g., an ultrasonic cleaner or washer-disinfector) to remove debris and improve cleaning effectiveness, and to decrease workers' exposure to blood.

* Reclean, repack, and resterilize any instrument package that has been compromised.

* Wear puncture- and chemical-resistant/ heavy-duty utility gloves for instrument cleaning and decontamination procedures.

* Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as a mask, protective eyewear, and gown if splashing or spraying is anticipated during cleaning.
