Schering-Plough Corp., Kenilworth, NJ, has agreed to acquire Organon BioSciences, including Roseland, NJ-based Organon USA, for approximately $14.4 billion. Through the transaction, which is reportedly expected to close by the end of the year, Schering-Plough will gain Organon's currently marketed products plus five compounds in phase III development. In other news, Schering-Plough is collaborating with Whitehouse Station, NJ-based Merck & Co. Inc. to develop a product combining the companies' cholesterol drug Zetia (ezetimibe) with Pfizer's Lipitor (atorvastatin calcium). The companies plan to begin marketing the combination cholesterol drug after patent exclusivity for Lipitor expires.
