White Knight Google to the Rescue!(Brief Article)

On February 12, Google purchased the searchable archive of Usenet postings from Deja.com (previously known as DejaNews), and rolled out a Usenet database with searchable postings dating back to August 2000. The site, groups.google.com, was still being called a beta site by Google at the time this issue went to press in March.

This acquisition by Google is very good news for searchers. The Usenet archive has been on shaky grounds ever since DejaNews morphed into Deja.com in 1999, and particularly since the site cut its staff from 140 to 20. The archives now appear to have found a safe home in what has become regarded as the most powerful, innovative, and respected search engine on the Internet.
