The pros and cons of pursuing free trade agreements

Manufacturing & Technology News, Oct 17, 2003

THE PROS AND CONS OF PURSUING FREE TRADE AGREEMENTS, a report from the Congressional Budget Office, says the agreements the United States has signed over the past 27 years have had little impact on the nation's trade deficit. Like NAFTA, the new FTAs being signed "should have a net beneficial effect on the U.S.

economy," says the report. "In most cases, all of the effects--good and bad--should be extremely small. Free trade agreements provide a way for the United States to help various countries for foreign policy reasons while having little effect on the United States." The report is available at http://www.cbo.gov/showdoc.clm?index=4458&sequence=0.
