Consultant: CNG, LNG Best Option to Reduce California Oil Use

A consultant to the California Energy Commission (CEC) says the cash-strapped state should continue to invest in natural gas fuels infrastructure, even though the state is 85% dependent on imported natural gas, which is still in excess of $5/million Btu on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The justification is that natural gas fuels - compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) - continue to be the leading alternatives to reduce gasoline and diesel consumption in California, according to TIAX consultants who performed the CEC's most recent assessment of the state's alternative fuels market.

The CEC has helped fund 19 CNG stations and nine LNG stations since September 2001....
