Oil Sands Upgrader Planned for Alberta

BA Energy Inc. plans to build and operate an oil sands upgrader in Strathcona County, Alberta. Dubbed the Heartland Upgrader, the unit will be built in three phases that will ultimately carry a 150,000 b/d capacity for oil sands bitumen and associated diluent. Existing producers will provide feedstock. After permitting, the plant is slated to open in the latter half of 2006. Surplus gas is generated during the upgrading process meeting the needs of day-to- day operations. Lower operating costs and lower CO emissions per barrel are the result, the firm says.
