CEC 'Energy Policy Report' Endorses 5% 'Non-petroleum' Diesel Cars

In a new report, the California Energy Commission (CEC) recommends that all future diesel fuels in the state should have at least 5% of "non-petroleum" components such as GTE FT diesel, biodiesel or ethanol, in order to meet the state's goals for reducing "petroleum dependence."

The latest report revises downward a 2003 CEC recommendation that 33% of all the state's diesel be blended with GTE as the most cost-effective strategy among all "alternative fuels" schemes. (See August, 2003 Gas to Liquids News, p1).

CEC has no authority to compel such blending, however. The report also failed to note that ethanol-diesel blends don't meet flash-point safety standards and vehicles burning such "e-diesel" blends must be fitted with special, rather costly flame-arresters, making...
