Puyallup Wafer Fab Rises From the Ashes.(Company Business and Marketing)

Microchip Technology is acquiring the semiconductor manufacturing complex in Puyallup, Wash,. from Matsushita Semiconductor. This plant has changed hands a number of times. Originally built by Fairchild Semiconductor (the original one), it later became part of National Semiconductor with the acquisition of Fairchild. National sold it to Matsushita Semiconductor, which shut it down as part of its worldwide cost cutting moves in 1998. Matsushita's closure badly bruised the Puyallup area, through loss of property taxes and the layoff of 340 workers.

The deal price was not disclosed, but ICV estimates about 50% below replacement value. The facility purchase will substantially increase Microchip's global manufacturing capacity, to accommodate increasing worldwide...
