As the popularity of photo books soars, professional imagers like American Color Imaging (www.acilab.com), Cedar Falls, Iowa, enter the market. Rather than wading in cautiously, American Color immersed itself by making a $700,000-plus investment in the Kodak NexPress 2100 digital press.

Mark Lane decided earlier this year the investment was a must. The only question was which printer/press to purchase.

"We felt competitive pressures to be able to produce photo books," says Lane, who serves portrait and wedding photographers. "Many labs have a lot invested in this. Luckily, we weren't the first to get into this. We were early, but not the first--and that's the best place to be.
