THE FTSE 100 broke through the 6000 barrier for the first time in five years on Friday on the back of strong results from UK insurers.

Buoyed by impressive results from both Prudential and Legal & General, the index crept past the psychological mark in the opening minutes of trading. It rose to 6044 by mid-morning before falling to 5999.4 by the close of play.

Market watchers said the FTSE 100 rally was evidence of a strong economy, with many predicting the good fortune to continue.

Ray Milne, managing director of Halifax Financial Services, said: "The stock market has endured a turbulent time over the past five years, but it is encouraging to see the FTSE 100 has risen past the 6000 mark once again.
