IT-savvy staff boost efficiency, Cranfield research reveals.

Small businesses can boost their efficiency by improving IT skills, according to a study by Cranfield University.

A lack of IT skills among staff in small businesses means companies are not making the most of their computer systems, the research suggested.

Figures show 80 per cent of companies do not gain any immediate benefit of a newly installed system, as staff do not know how the new systems work.

According to Cranfield, the lack of skills mean some companies waste as long as nine months after a new system goes live before using it. As a result of the lack of skills, potentially useful systems such Customer Relationship Management software and Enterprise Resource Planning are not fully utilised.
