In August 1996, John Malone was putting the finishing touches to Premier Mortgage Service before its launch in November of the same year. Now, 10 years on, Mr Malone is still the managing director of PMS, having turned it into one of the most influential organisations in the intermediary mortgage market.

But for some months there have been rumours -" helped along by hints from the man himself -" of his imminent retirement from the company.

And while the mortgage industry -" no doubt like any other industry -" loves to speculate about who is in and who is out, the interest over Mr Malone's successor has been particularly charged.

As Mr Malone said himself, it is hard to ignore a business that will see nigh on AGBP45bn of business this year....
