Charges, a lack of past performance figures and the undermining of the adviser's role are the main factors holding back IFAs from using discretionary managers, experts at an industry debate concluded.

IFAs and fund managers at a round table hosted by GE Life were divided over the benefits of discretionary management.

The experts were debating the results of a survey by GE Life showing that three quarters of financial advisers felt they were spending more time researching investments for their clients than they did five years ago.

About 80 per cent of financial advisers surveyed said they used computer-based profiling to determine the best investment model for their clients.
