It was a quiet New Year's Eve in the Prestridge household. A knees up down the local hostelry - a wonderfully camp and joyous public house - was not for us this year.

Instead, while the boys played upstairs on their assortment of X-boxes, computers and Playstations, we settled down to watch Ken Loach's splendid, if a little meandering film, The Wind That Shakes The Barley. The only interruption was a cacophony of fireworks to mark 2007's arrival, an event that sent our slightly scatty lurcher Tara into the nearest toilet in search of protection and solitude and respite.
