Food Lion Judgement Against ABC Reduced To $2.(Brief Article)

All but $2 of a $315,000 award to Salisbury, NC-based Food Lion Inc. was thrown out by a Federal appeals court last week. A Federal District Court in Greensboro, NC had originally awarded the supermarket chain $5.5 million in January 1997 when it found that ABC News had engaged in fraud in 1992 when it reported the chain sold meat and other food products that were unsanitary. That award was subsequently reduced to $315,000, however.

The two-to-one ruling by the United State Court of Appeals in Richmond, VA found that Food Lion's attempt to win a multimillion dollar fraud verdict because two ABC employees lied to get jobs at the chain was an "end-run" around journalists' First Amendment rights. The case was initiated following a Primetime Live program in 1992....
