Labor Department Probes Poultry Industry.(Brief Article)

Food Institute Report, The, February, 2000

The Department of Labor is conducting a nationwide audit of wage and hour practices in the poultry industry, according to comments made in a Securities & Exchange Commission filing by Tyson Foods recently. The audit reportedly began on Feb. 9 at 17 poultry plants and will eventually include 51 plants.

The Department is said to be investigating the pay practices related to processing plant and catching crew employees. The investigation includes a review of practices which are the subject of a lawsuit against Tyson, in which employees allege that the nation's largest chicken producer did not pay them for all hours worked and improperly paid them for overtime hours.
