Sharp Gain in Wholesale Food Prices.

Following a 0.5% decrease in January, wholesale food prices in February advanced 0.7% from the prior month and stood at 1.3% higher than Feb. 1999. Food prices at the consumer level, meanwhile, were flat (see story on front page).

Leading last month's gain was a sharp increase in the price of eggs - up 17.5% from January after climbing 8.6% a month earlier. Significant increases were also apparent for fresh fruits (up 7%), fish (up 6.4%) and pork (up 6.2% from January).

Somewhat offsetting were lower prices for fresh vegetables last month (down 6.7%) followed by a 4.6% dip in chicken prices, a 3.8% decline in turkey prices and a 1% decrease in rice prices.
