With roughly 45% of all merchandise imported from countries like China or Taiwan and less than 0.1% of sales spent on advertising, Chesapeake, VA-based Dollar Tree has become the most profitable of a trio of dollar retailers on the Forbes Platinum List. Net income has risen an average of 40% a year for five years and in 1998, sales topped $1 billion for the first time. For the year ended Sept. 30, 2000 sales hit $1.6 billion and although the average customer only spends $6.30 per visit, the company's gross profit margin is 37%.

Unlike its rivals Family Dollar and Dollar General, everything costs exactly one dollar at Dollar Tree and because it won't boost prices, Dollar Tree must rely more than its rivals on sales from new stores.
