Modest Food Price Increases Seen This Year.

Differing slightly from projections made last year, USDA still sees only modest food price inflation this year, according to Agricultural Economist Annette Clauson speaking at USDA's Agricultural Outlook Forum 2001.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for all food increased 2.3% in 2000, after increasing 2.1% in 1999 and 2.2% in 1998. Following three years of modest increases, the CPI for all food is expected to increase 2% to 2.5% in 2001. Food at home is projected to increase 2 to 2.5% while food away from home should increase 2.5 to 3% in 2001.
