More Misbranding Alleged By Tomato Processor.(Stanislaus Food Products)(Brief Article)

Modesto CA-based tomato processor, Stanislaus Food Products, has asked the Food and Drug Administration to look into possible misbranding of two more tomato products, including Chalkis USA Inc.'s Red Top Tomato Sauce on which the label states made from "fresh, sun-ripened tomatoes." Similar to allegations made against Heinz Tomato Puree recently (see FOOD INSTITUTE REPORT, May 14, page 9], Stanislaus claims the sauce is actually made from reconstituted tomato paste and puree with water.

The other product, Hirzel Canning Company's Dei Fratelli "Fresh & Ready" tomato products, is said to be misbranded because of the inclusion of the word Fresh on the label since it is a processed product. In both instances, Stanislaus is requesting FDA take prompt action, which...
