Supermarket pharmacies continue to rank as the "fastest growing segment of retail pharmacy" in both market share and prescription volume, according to Report From the 2001 Supermarket Pharmacy Survey a new Food Marketing Institute (FMI) study, reported Drug Store News.

Recently, two supermarket chains have moved to open their first pharmacies: Gennardi's, a Norristown, PA-division of Safeway, opened two pharmacies this summer and plans to have six in operation by year's end. Big Y, Springfield, MA, opened its first pharmacy last month and may add 11 more by June 2002.

There are now more than 8,800 supermarket pharmacies in the U.S., representing 17% of the retail pharmacy market, according to FMI. The survey projects that the number of outlets likely...
