Claiming Westlake Village, CA-based Dole Food Co. failed to properly notify them before initiating a layoff of 1,900 workers, a group of farmworkers has filed a $4.8 million class action suit against the firm in Federal court. The suit alleges the company violated the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Act, which requires firms to give their employees 60 days notice prior to initiating mass layoffs, reported The Fresno Bee (Nov. 16).

While Dole would not comment on pending litigation, in July the company stated it did give the workers advance notice of the layoffs and that the employees' seasonal status did not guarantee them a likelihood of work that would have been covered by the act.
