Shipping fruits and vegetables is getting easier for Northern San Joaquin Valley growers, due to a railroad-trucking alliance to transport high-value, high-risk crops, according to the Modesto Bee. "Timeliness is everything when delivering perishable produce," said Dave Parker of the California Tree Fruit Agreement, which markets fresh peaches, plums and nectarines.

Earlier this month, the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Co. formed an alliance with Swift Transportation Co. to provide shipping services that minimize the time fresh produce is left on a dock or truck. The deal will alleviate the juggling of delivery schedules between trucking and railroad companies that causes losses in product.
