The number of dolphin deaths in Pacific tuna fisheries has been greatly reduced over the past decade, due large in part to strong public outcry. However, scientists now say that fishing net entanglements in the Atlantic and elsewhere remain a big problem, killing more dolphins than they had realized and also causing deaths of whales.

Approximately 60,000 dolphins, porpoises and whales died each year in fishing gear entanglements, making it the leading cause of death among the cetacean group of mammals, according to scientists at Duke University, reported The New York Times on the Web (July 24).
