The opening of six Save-A-Lot limited-assortment stores over the past year has enabled D&W Food Centers to widen its appeal and reach a more price-conscious shopper, while expanding its market share in western Michigan, noted Supermarket News (July 29). The Grand Rapids, MI-based chain operates 25 D&W banner stores, which register sales of about $370 million, compared to about $15 million in sales for the six Save-A-Lot units.

Among the companies strategies:

Expanding its upscale store base past western Michigan, possibly into Lansing or Ann Arbor, MI or northern Indiana.

Expanding the Save-A-Lot format into new territories, possibly north of the company's home base.
