Food Institute Report, The, August, 2002

The Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) has published a notice Aug. 2 [see FOOD INSTITUTE REPORT, Aug. 5, page 1 for earlier story] requesting public comments on proposed federal actions to update field test requirements and to establish early food safety assessments for biotechnology-derived food and feed crop plants. Comments may be submitted to the OSTP no later than Sept. 30. Food Institute counsel, Olsson, Frank & Weeda, has summarized the notice below.

In the notice, the federal government is proposing to develop a coordinated regulatory approach to deal with the increasing likelihood that genetic material from biotechnology-derived crops that have not undergone all required regulatory reviews may find its way into commercial crops. According...
