Three international agencies--The World Health Organization (WHO), the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Organization for Animal Health --urged killing birds as the best approach to controlling the outbreak of bird flu sweeping Asia, noted The Sacramento Bee (Jan. 29). Experts said there is no consensus that vaccination is enough to avert an epidemic, though it can be a potentially helpful addition to slaughter. Tens of millions of chickens and ducks have died in Asia--from the disease or in government-ordered slaughters aimed at containing it.
