Bush administration unveils 2009 budget.(WASHINGTON)(George W. Bush)

FDA announced the President's budget proposal for Fiscal Year (FY) 2009 last week and the budget request for FDA nears $2.4 billion, which is an increase of $129.7 million above appropriated levels for FY 2008. The request includes funding for new budget authority, an increase of $50.7 million, of which $25 million is for cost of living (COLA) pay increases. It also includes an increase of $78.99 million from both current law user fees and new user fees. The highlights of the budget are outlined below.

Initiative Proposals for FY 2009

The budget proposal includes a savings of $8.9 million stemming from improvements in management practices and administrative services, and past investments in information systems.
