Air Force cracks down on CFC use for new, existing hvacr equipment

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Air Force has issued an "Engineering Technical Letter" (ETL) restricting the service's use of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) refrigerants and blends that contain CFCs. Other armed services may follow its lead.

The ETL restricts the use of CFCs-11, -12, -113, -114, and -115, and mixtures that contain these compounds, such as CFCs-500, -501, and -502.

According to ETL 88-8, issued by Col. Charles A. Sippial, Engineering Division chief, those who design and maintain hvac systems must "reduce Air Force dependence on regulated CFCs to a minimum.
