The Washington Gas Light Company is teaming up with 140 contractors in Northern Virginia to replace residential heat pumps with efficient gas furnaces. Each sale nets the contractor about $4,000; the owner receives easy financing for the furnace. For many contractors, the extra business helps make up for a shortfall due to the poor economy and bad weather.

FALLS CHURCH, Va. - A lucrative replacement market, driven by the local gas utility, has emerged in northern Virginia.

The Washington Gas Light Company, working with hvac contractors, expects to replace 3,000 residential heat pumps with high-efficiency gas furnaces this year - adding to the 1,000 that were replaced last year.
