A.O. Smith Electrical Products Co has developed a 'digital switched reluctance' electric motor that it expects to make the traditional brushless permanent-magnet models obsolete. The heating and ventilation industry will benefit from applying the technology because it will make heating and cooling equipment more efficient and flexible. The simple motor is inexpensive to make. It is combined with high-tech controls that allow it to operate continuously at a constant speed.
