EPA Resolves Cases of Ammonia, Benzene Leaks.(Environmental Protection Agency)(Brief Article)(Statistical Data Included)

CHICAGO, IL -- The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 5 has settled two cases with Chicago area facilities involving ammonia and benzene leaks.

Stock Yards Packing Co., headquartered here, has agreed to pay a $11,855 civil penalty. EPA said the company failed to submit the Emergency and Hazardous Chemical Inventory forms for anhydrous ammonia to the Illinois Emergency Response Commission (IERC) and the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) from 1996 to 1998.

Federal laws require reporting of on-site anhydrous ammonia above 500 lb by March 1 every year.

In another matter, UOP, LLC, Des Plaines, IL, has agreed to pay a $6,188 civil penalty and complete an environmental project costing $84,060.
